Education, the hope of tomorrow.

So, I was opportuned to teach a set of students in some schools and I was deeply saddened by what I met. I was not saddened because of the calibre of the students I met there, I was pained because of what their environment had turned them into. The environment does not have expectations of them, so, they pay no attention to them. I thought it was bad before, no it’s just worse. A friend of mine recently went on a rant complaining that Exams don’t really test true knowledge which I agree with because the exams are constructed in a way that its those who can present the best answer on that day of the exam that are smart. After that day, no one gives a care whether he or she actually is knowledgeable or not. However, with what I saw, exams not being the true test of knowledge is the least of our worries. When we begin to explore the educational standards all around this country, we will cry for the many sad cases.

I sincerely believe that Education is what would change the world, but for education to be able to do that, I think we really need to rewrite the books, both figuratively and literally. We are stuck in a rut. We are bound in the chains of ignorance and backwardness. We need to step into the realm of enlightenment. We all complain about the government being bad. It’s because we have trained incompetent people. So, we produce, recycle and present incompetence of the years. When they say the youth are the hope for tomorrow, I sincerely believe they were referring to their time in school. That is the period to shape them because if they are damaged when they get out, the hope has already been lost.

Well, here is what I propose. We need to pay attention to our students and worry less about our salaries and the government should pay attention to their salaries and worry less about what prevents them from paying workers. For the rest of the nation, let’s invest our time in education. We want white collar jobs, but we complain about the incompetence of many of the teachers we have. Unfortunately, you, the competent ones, when asked to be teachers, we refuse because we consider teaching a worthless job. It really is the greatest gift you can give humanity. Lest you forget, if we continue to have incompetent teachers, these are the ones that would remain and train your children and then, the cycle of vicious incompetence and ignorance continues. Students or children are not born to be dull or slow or anything demeaning that we complain about. We offer them greatness from the start and they become the greatness. This is what I feel and I hope you see some sense in this.

Thank You.

  1. It’s quite true that the failure of our country in the production of good leaders is a result of poor education. At home, school, or work; the right values and principles haven’t been instilled in our people yet. I guess it’s best we start the change from the so-called teachers. Too much has been damaged, it’ll take time.
